"Extremely noteworthy is Tequila Tapatio and the Camarena family. Originally founded
by Señor Felipe Camarena in 1937. His son, Felipe J. Camarena Orozco took over
operations in 1971. Tequila Aficionado reported the passing of Don Felipe on May 03
earlier this year (2004). His son, Carlos Christian Camarena Curien, who has long been
an integral part of Tequila Tapatio is now apparently in charge of operations. Most
people are familiar with the US equivalent of this tequila sold under the name of El
Tesoro de Don Felipe. The impression I'm under about the production methods of
Tapatio and El Tesoro is that they are (or were) pretty much the same. Tapatio was
around in Mexico for a long time before Bob Denton approached the Camarena family
to import their tequila to the USA, I believe, in the early 1990's. According to Bob
Emmons in the "Book of Tequila", Denton and Tapatio agreed on "El Tesoro de Don
Felipe" for the name of these exports. So basically you find El Tesoro de Don Felipe in
the USA and Tapatio in Mexico." -
